Draco had his school bag with him. This was his free period and he really had nothing better to do. He rather fancied a nap but the common room would propably be occupied by the other slytherins that also had a free period. Knowing his luck Pansy would most likely be one of them. Finding himself on the lawn she sat down by a tree that had plenty of shade from the sun.
He was bored that was for sure. Switching positions he was now laying on his stomach and rummaging through his bag. Might as well do some last minute homework, he had better things to do with his time than spending it in detention. Taking out his quill, parchment, and charms book he tried to remember the essay he was supposed to write. "Ah. Describe the effects of cheering charms." he muttered to himself.
Flipping to page 328 he set out to work. His quill flowed across the parchment quickly and fluently. With one final word on the parchment he found himself done. Trying to be patient he let the ink try for a minute or so before rolling it up and shoving it back in his bag. Closing his eyes he felt the slight breeze move through his hair. It was such a nice day but he was so bored. And there weren't many students out here. What was he to do now?

Hermione was happy to be returning to Hogwarts, even if some deemed it to be unsafe. Truthfully, she didn't believe in all this Dark Lord nonsense that was floating around on word of mouth. She knew that there was a threat (after all, she was best friends with Harry Potter), but she couldn't believe some of the rumors that were being spread about the extremity of the situation. Hermione was one of those people that preferred to find things out for herself, then knowing the truth of the matter. After all, Miss Hermione Granger was Muggleborn, having no traces of magic in her family until she came along. From what this Dark Lord and his followers dictated as their covenant, Hermione should be one of the first targets. But whatever, the young witch was simply happy to be back at school amongst friends. The year, albeit her last, had a promising outlook. She had been made Head Girl (even though it was alongside Draco Malfoy), and she was ready and rearing to get a head start on her schoolwork.
What excited her most, though, was the fact that she could see all of her friends again after having been away from most of them during the summer. It was sort of unexpected, but the one person that she was actually quite anxious to see was Draco. Draco Malfoy, of all people. Even though they bickered most of the time, she knew that she was going to be stuck with him for the majority if not all of her time due to their Head Boy and Girl duties. So, she was ready to lay down the line and tell him what was up. She would have no shenannigans this year, and especially none from Draco. He could complain and whine all he wanted, but Hermione was most definitely not going to put up with his trouble-making disposition.
Walking out to the lawns to get a breath of fresh air, Hermione wasn't surprised to find that she wasn't the only one outside; someone else sat outside, a book resting beside him. For a moment, he looked so serene, staring out at the water as if in a trance. Yet that was abruptly broken - the boy glanced down at the pile of books that lay at his side, and it was then that Hermione realized who it was. Draco Malfoy. Of all people - he had to be the first one that she saw first. Well, might as well make the attempt. After all, from what she had heard from Ginny over the summer, her and mister Malfoy had become well acquainted. "Actually attempting your schoolwork, now are we, Malfoy?" Hermione jested as she strolled over to where he sat, still reverting to calling him by his surname. "I thought you usually bullied the third and fourth years into doing it." [/blockquote]

He saw Hermione walking his way and he was sure this was going to be amusing. Hermione Granger, best friend of Harry Potter, one third of the golden trio. He smirked lightly as she made her comments. "Well Granger, you of all people should know not to believe the rumors." he said. It was true, he never bullied the third and fouth years into doing his homework, he'd be sure to fail that way.
"I usually bully the fifth and sixth years into it." he added. He was hoping to get her started in one of her long speeches that she was famous for. It wasn't uncommon for her to be lecturing the Weasel and Potty on the same thing. He had better get used to her lectures with her being Head Girl and all, that meant he as head boy would be working with her closely most of the time.
Taking out another book he began to flip through it with disinterest evident. He had grown closer to Ginny over the summer and he realized now she had probably told Granger all about it. Still he wasn't going to bring up the subject just yet. Better still he wondered if she was going to tell Potter and Weasley, because that wasn't something he felt like dealing with just yet. Glancing up at her he wondered if she was going to have a witty comeback.

Draco seemed unphased by Hermione's sudden entrance, not missing a beat. The young brunette couldn't help but stifle a giggle - she hadn't expected anything less than a witty remark from him. Then again, even she would have acted similarly had he sat down next to her without warning. However, Hermione shook her head quickly, responding to Draco's comments. "Apparently you can't recognize sarcasm when it's breathing down your neck, Malfoy," she joked, tracing her hand seductively down the back of his neck. Lately, Hermione didn't know what had come over her, but the young witch figured that she might as well toy with his mind while she had the chance. "You're obviously not as apt as you try to make others presume."
Honestly, it was all ridiculous. Hermione couldn't understand why people regarded Draco in such high esteem - he may be attractive, but his personality was less than amiable. He wasn't even close to amiable - he was a prat, that's what he was. And did that stop anyone from fawning over him? Apparently not so. That being said, Hermione nevertheless retained her own sentiments and tried to stomach having to share Head Duties with him. Responsibility came first. "I usually bully the fifth and sixth years into it," she heard Draco retort, responsively turning her gaze to settle her chocolate brown orbs on his face.
What? Hermione had forgotten how much of a git Draco could be sometimes. "Honestly," she said with spite, her eyes glistening with fury. "You are so immature." How on Earth were the two of them going to get along for the entire year? Hermione would have to drag Harry and Ron around with her wherever she went; otherwise, she'd never be able to deal with the arrogant, self-absorbed Slytherin. However, for the first time since she'd met him, Hermione felt a queasy feeling in her stomach, almost as if she had butterflies flittering around inside of her. She wasn't nervous around Draco Malfoy, was she? Great wizards, she hoped not - she couldn't possibly have those sort of feelings for him. With a sigh, Hermione looked Draco directly in the eye. "And you better get over yourself," she said truthfully. "Because we have duties to attend to." [/blockquote]

He didn't even try to supress the smirk forming on his face. Granger was keeping up with his remarks with some witty ones of her own. She obviously wasn't as dense as the two she spent her time with. "Apparently you can't recognize sarcasm when it's breathing down your neck, Malfoy," Before he could even make a comeback he felt something strange and shifted his gaze slightly and unnoticably to see Hermione tracing her fingers along the back of his neck.
Her fingers weren't rough as one might expect them to be from turning many pages from many books. He was honestly shocked that she would do anything like that, especially to him. Trying to shrug it off as nothing, he tried to hide the fact that it unnerved him a little bit. Still it was making his mind race in circles. Did anyone really know the real Hermione? Sure they all saw a bookworm, a know-it-all, and the best friend of Harry Potter and Ron Weasley. But was there more to her than met the eye?
"Honestly," she said with spite, her eyes glistening with fury. "You are so immature." Turning to face her he was glad that he had hit a nerve with her. "And the two you spend your time with are the poster boys for mature." he said scathingly. So he might not be the maturest one in their year but he wasn't as immature as she thought. Staring her down he waited for what she would say next. Not sure what to expect because she seemed a little off today.
"And you better get over yourself, Because we have duties to attend to." she had said. This made Draco laugh, not outwardly so Granger could be a witness, but on the inside where only he could hear. "Duties. Is that you ever think of?" he asked with a sigh. Before he had come back he was sure that this was going to be the most interesting year ever, and he wasn't so sure now hearing the way Granger talked about their duties as heads. Come to think of it what did she think of? Surely not all schoolwork and whatever rights she was fighting for.
